On Monday 25th September I took advantage of a half day off work when a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper was found at Blacktoft Sands. Less than an hour away, I was soon on my way minutes after it was reported and on arrival I squeezed into a packed hide and the bird was showing well.
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (and Curlew Sandpiper), Blacktoft Sands, East Yorkshire
A breeding bird of east Siberia, this long range migrant winters in SE Asia and Australia. The rich chestnut cap, one of the main features of this species, was very obvious. It's not often you get to see a new bird within an hour of home.
Thanks for looking.
